Tips for Safe Fueling

Safe FuelingMillions of customers visit our stores each day, and the flow of traffic can be very busy. In addition to being mindful of pedestrians, please follow these simple steps to help prevent accidents while fueling:

  • Turn off your car and take your keys with you.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Prevent static electricity buildup by touching the metal of your vehicle’s hood or door to the metal of our dispenser pump before you begin fueling.
  • Use only the dispenser’s spring-loaded refueling latch — don’t insert any objects into the dispenser to keep the fuel flowing.
  • Be sure the nozzle is fully inserted into your vehicle.
  • Do not leave the nozzle unattended.
  • Don’t be distracted while fueling.
  • Please avoid using any electronic devices (cell phones, computers, etc.) while fueling.
  • Immediately report any equipment malfunction or fuel spill to the store employee.

Safety Tips

Portable Containers

  • Use only UL- or government-approved containers.
  • Do not fill container near any hot part of your vehicle (such as the motor or exhaust pipe).
  • Always fill containers on the ground.
  • Do not use the spring-loaded refueling latch — manually control the flow of fuel into your container.
  • Do not top off — leave about 5% of space in the container.
  • Always use tight-fitting caps/lids.
  • Secure containers in your vehicle to prevent movement during transport

Fire Safety

  • The safety of lives is top priority — if a fire starts, leave the area immediately.
  • Notify the store employee — all gas station attendants are trained to shut off the pumps and call for help. If safe to do so, they may use a fire extinguisher.
